MARINA, Calif. — The Marina Branch Library is inviting residents to take part in a community altar commemorating Día de los Muertos, with an opportunity to remember loved ones and pets who have died.

The altar is scheduled to be on display November 1–12, 2026, according to Monterey Bay Parent’s local events calendar.

How to participate

Families who want to contribute may bring a framed photograph of a person or pet they wish to honor. The event listing asks that framed photos be submitted by November 1 and collected by November 12.

Residents with questions about timing, available space or how contributions will be handled should call the library at 831-883-7507 before visiting.

The Marina Branch Library is located on Seaside Circle in Marina. The display offers a public way for families to share memories while learning about a tradition observed in many Mexican and Mexican American communities.

What Día de los Muertos means

Día de los Muertos, commonly observed November 1 and 2, honors the lives of those who have died. Ofrendas often include photographs, flowers, decorative paper and other objects that families associate with those being remembered.

Although the dates overlap with the Halloween season, Día de los Muertos is a distinct cultural tradition centered on remembrance, family and continuity across generations.

Participation at a community altar is voluntary. Visitors should treat the display and any photographs with care and follow the library’s instructions about handling submitted materials.
