MARINA, Calif. — November 4, 2026. The first unofficial returns from Marina City Council District 4 produced an extraordinarily narrow result: Brad Imamura led Mike Simmons by just one vote. A third candidate, Athena Burciaga, held approximately 29% of the votes in the initial reported count. The figures refer specifically to the first release on November 3, 2026, not to a certified election outcome.

Why a one-vote margin matters

One ballot can be enough to change a one-vote margin, but the first tally is not the complete county canvass. Eligible mail ballots, provisional ballots and ballots needing further review may be added or verified after Election Day. It would be inaccurate to announce a winner, claim an automatic recount or infer the final margin from this first release.

The three candidates

The City of Marina’s candidate register lists Michael Simmons, Athena Burciaga and Brad Imamura as the qualified candidates for the District 4 seat. Monterey County Weekly reported the one-vote Imamura–Simmons difference from the first county results made public on election night, with Burciaga third.

Track the subsequent count

Official results and any later revisions belong to the Monterey County Elections Department. A local election tracker also links to the District 4 chart, but media update times and county release times can differ.

In a separate contest, Marina voters chose a mayor and considered Measure Q. Those results should not be combined with the District 4 council tally.
