MARINA, Monterey County — October 26, 2026. Renovations at Preston Park remain under study as Marina examines the future of its athletic fields, drainage, lighting and related facilities. The city’s planning page identifies an estimated project budget of $10 million–$14 million, but describes the project as being in a feasibility-study phase rather than already under construction.

What is being evaluated?

City materials say the preliminary process covers environmental review, land surveying, cost estimates, potential field lighting, storm drainage and recreational needs. Staff are gathering direct input from local youth sports groups so that proposed facilities reflect the sports and activities people actually use.

What is the city’s current timetable?

Marina outlines fall 2026 for feasibility work and technical research. It lists the end of 2026 for design, request-for-proposals steps and a construction contract award; groundbreaking is targeted for late 2027, with an estimated ribbon-cutting by the end of 2028. Each milestone is prospective and may move as planning and approvals continue.

Why youth sports input matters

Questions about field design should be informed by the ages of participants, the number of teams, inclusive access, safe lighting, drainage, scheduling and maintenance. A better-informed project can potentially serve school and community sport needs, but the current study by itself does not establish that all requested features will be funded or built.

What taxpayers should watch

A range of $10 million–$14 million is an estimate, not evidence that the city has spent that amount. Residents can follow council budget actions, proposed construction plans, environmental documents and final awarded contracts to distinguish planning from committed spending.
